Vital Skills: Redefining Healthcare Professionalism

New Bridge training embeds the following into every program it offers for healthcare workers to learn essential skills through DBT’s four pillars—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—helping them manage the challenges of their profession. This approach enhances both worker well-being and patient outcomes, making it vital for professional development.

New Bridge’s healthcare training programs are grounded in the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), recognizing that success in healthcare goes beyond technical expertise and requires emotional resilience and effective communication. DBT’s four core pillars—mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness—serve as a solid foundation for students entering high-pressure healthcare environments.

Although DBT is traditionally used in clinical therapy, we build on its pillars when building the curriculum that equips students with the coping skills and emotional intelligence essential for long-term success in healthcare careers (Linehan, 1993; Rounsaville & Carroll, 2021).

Subjects Taught Include:

  • Mindfulness enables students to remain focused and present, a crucial skill for patient care.
  • Distress tolerance prepares them to navigate workplace stress without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Emotion regulation aids in managing stress while maintaining professionalism during challenging moments.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness enhances teamwork and interactions with patients.
